Sexist Mascots
With the pursuit of equal rights and the implementation of Title IX, Eitzen (1989) states our schools should be proactively researching certain mascots and team names to see if there is any wrong doing and fixing those that are found offensive. According to Duncan (1993), Dane-Staples (2012) and Eitzen (2001), the increase in female participation in sports has resulted in more female imagery in sports, but these images portray negative and sexist ideals. Title IX has helped increase female opportunities and participation in sports and our schools should start revamping their imagery to display the positives about females in athletics. Finding a way to positive portray and support our females athletes is essential to equal rights and a welcoming environment.
