Changing Your Mascot
Questions
All surveys will give you data, but what the data tells you is based upon the questions you ask. Demographics, response and trends within the data are all controlled by your survey asking the right questions.
Demographics
Age, race, sex, occupation, education level and other factors are all a part of demographics. You may find that the majority of your school's community little issue with your school's imagery and logos, but demographics may show you that the majority of a people within your community are seeing a problem.
Possible questions:
· What year were you born?
· What nationality to you identify with?
· How are you affiliated with the district or school?
· What school do you attend?
Likert Scale Questions
Some questions do not have a definitive answer. According to Lane and Nevill (2007), sport and exercise psychologists use self-report data where assessments are made on the Likert scale, where numbers are designed to correlate the strength of feelings. Likert scale questions are a non-comparative scaling technique and are unidimensional (only measure a single trait) in nature. Respondents are asked to indicate their level of agreement with a given statement by way of an ordinal scale. Now, your data can truly tell you how offensive things may be and if there may only be changes need to particular things or how drastic changes should be.
Sample Question:
How offensive is the following image?
1. Extremely offensive
2. Slightly offensive
3. Neutral
4. Not offensive
5. Completely not offensive
Open-ended Questions
You may want to ask your community for feedback. This gives them the opportunity to have the floor and truly express their feelings. While there will may not be consistent responses from all participants, the feedback you get will be unsolicited and honest. You can find your best ideas and solutions by simply letting participants give their open opinions.
