Learn How to Make the Change

According to Toporek (2013), the Oregon board of education voted to ban the K-12 Public schools from using American Indian mascots or imagery. They took information, testimony and data from the local community in order to come to a decision to ban them state wide. The steps listed below guide you to make the same changes in your schools.

Your high schools, middle schools and some elementary schools may be perpetuating the same images and attitudes. Young women, people of color and students in general should be free from slandered imagery or negative energy. This website outlines a general process to identifying a possible problem in your community and implement change in your school's program.

The four steps are the main tabs above:

  1. Identifying the Problem

  2. Surveying the Community

  3. Presenting to the Board

  4. Implementing the Change

Each step has its own sub steps to help you make reforms to the team names and mascots in your community and district.
